Just a super quick post before I head out to work for the day! Here are some of the bears I made a few weeks ago for a craft show that my mom and I did. I finally managed to write down my pattern, which made crocheting these puppies go fairly quickly. The part that always ends up taking me forever is dressing them, anyway. There was felt and ribbon allll over our living room floor. I'm a really really messy worker.

Wow, it sure has been a long time since I've written a post. So many things have happened! Chickadee is going really well! We gave a lightening talk called Maker/Player as part of Pecha Kucha Portland, back in July, about our creative process, Notorious Inc. dev and the importance of collaboration. I am not a public speaker and it's about the last thing I want to be doing, ever. BUT, I did it, with lots of encouragement from Adam, and practice, I was able to get through it! I think I even did pretty well! You can watch it and let me know!

Alright, I think that's probably enough of an update for the moment. I'm going to share some stuff I've been making next!
So. Big news that I can't believe I haven't posted about yet!! Adam and I have started a game studio Chickadee Games!

We're most of the way through our first game, Notorious Inc! (You can read about it and see some screenshots on the Games page on our site) I'm learning a lot of new stuff and Adam has been a really great teacher and I think I've been surprising both of us with the art I've been making. I've been drawing bears and bunnies for so many years now that I was worried that was all I knew anymore!

So please, go check out our site and like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.

Hi-fives, everyone! I finally finished the giant granny square afghan that I've been posting about for years now.

I decided to call it quits last night while Adam and I were watching some stuff on Netflix. It's been nice to always have it around when I want to do some mindless crocheting but at the same time, it's never finished status always made me feel too guilty to start anything new.

It's a bit of a beast - roughly 64 inches square. I wanted it big enough to fit on top of our bed and big enough to actually cover you when you're feeling like you want to snuggle - because let's be real, nobody has ever snuggled successfully under a lap blanket. Well, no adult, anyway.

So here it is, all finished. Never to be blogged about again. Made from a zillion skeins of Lion Brand's Cotton Ease.

HEY! I have another important and free cross stitch pattern for you guys. This time it's for Hunger Games fans.

I've been seeing a lot about the Catching Fire film lately and, AND, the Cover Girl Capitol Collection (I'm dying over here about that, by the way!) so Hunger Games has been on my brain. I thought I'd try and do another "important tools" type pattern and decided to go with the backpack that Katniss nabs from the cornucopia. So, it includes her muddy backpack, crackers, rolled up sleeping bag, matches, night vision glasses, dried beef, iodine, wire and water bottle!
A few weeks ago Adam surprised me with a 3DS and Animal Crossing: New Leaf. We've been playing it every day since and it's pretty great! And since it's been on my mind non-stop, I decided to design a free, AC inspired pattern.

The Most Important Tools mini cross stitch pattern that features, well, just that! The most important tools you need in your AC town! It's available as a free download in .pdf format and you can click here to get it or click on the image below!

It measures about 2 1/2 inches on 14 pt and about 3 1/4 on 11 pt. See, I told you, mini! Happy stitching!

Ocean, mountains and forests. I can think of few places I'd rather be at any given time. Adam and I have been fairly lucky the past month or so. We got to spend a week, almost two at a beautiful house in Harpswell with some of my family. We got to wake up every morning to views of the Cribstone Bridge, Orr's and Bailey Islands. It was hard to leave but luckily we only live about and hour away.

And then last week we spent 3 days in North Conway, NH with some of Adam's family. We left early on Sunday so we could take a drive up and down the Kancamagus Highway. If you live anywhere near either Conway or Lincoln, NH (where the highway runs between) then I can't recommend the drive enough. It's only 26 miles with lots and lots scenic overlooks, trails and recreation areas nestled in the White Mountain National Forest. I've been on it dozens of times and it never looses any of it's beauty.

We also made a point to check out a trail nearby where we were staying in North Conway. We went to Diana's Bath in Bartlett. It's a series of waterfalls which I didn't take many pictures of because it would have mostly just been of people in the water. It was beautiful though and you could climb up giant rocks to the top of the falls. We kept going a little bit farther along a trail that runs alongside the falls.

I've been feeling so lucky lately in regards to where we live. Both of these places are easy day/afternoon trips and despite the fact that we've been to them plenty of times there is still so much for us to explore.

We've had a little bit of a strange spring and summer here in Maine. It felt like spring took forever to get here and summer seemed to be dragging its feet and then we had 3 or 4 day 90+ degree heat wave. Then we had weeks in the 60's and 70's. I don't really want to complain because, as I think I've mentioned before, we live in a very sunny (read: hot) 3rd floor apartment and it was nice to have cool air flowing through.

I started the pattern for Beach Bear on one of the cooler, rainy days while I was wondering if summer was ever actually going to happen. Well, it has! And what better way to kick it off than with a fun little stitching project!
I was recently able to get my laptop working again, which has been awesome. However, the biggest reason that I wanted to use it again is because a little while before it crapped out on me I had purchased a program to make cross stitch patterns. I was able to make a few before my computer, let's just say, "slept" for over a year but I never really got to share them.

So, I am very excited to share with you all, my first cross stitch pattern - Lady Bear!

Lady Bear cross stitch pattern is available now in .pdf as an instant download in the S. Jane Craft shop. She's a fun little beginner project, if you haven't done much cross stitch and she is worked up in only four colors so she's easily customizable!

Happy stitching!!

I have really been terrible at this blogging thing lately. It's been a bit of a whirlwind end of April and beginning of May. We hosted a little end-of-semester get together for Adam's students, Monaco (the game Adam did art for) was released ,we had two of our best friends from Oregon visit us for a week, cooked a belated mother's day dinner, went to a baby shower and I think some other things that I'm probably forgetting. Point is, for people who don't usually have much on their schedules, it's been a busy jumble of weeks for us. In fact, I don't think we have any other scheduled plans until July, when my dad comes to visit from Seattle.

But oh, our friends visiting was so perfect. I think I'm still feeling a little bit (ok, maybe a lot bit) of the sting of them not being here. It was so wonderful to see their faces, and joke around with them and show them all the places and things we love about Maine and our little city of Portland. I think that, at the very least they liked it enough here to visit again.

It can be so hard to have some much distance between friends that you love so much and I'm so, so, so grateful that they wanted to come out and visit us.

Oh and I'm also grateful that Ashley gave me the idea to draw on my new business cards. I'm not sure I would have thought of it!
Holy cow, I can not even believe I haven't posted this on the blog yet! I feel like March just flew by and was so much busier than I expected. BUT HEY.
Have you ever wanted your own little S. Jane bear to love and hug and take on adventures? And did you also want the self satisfaction of having made it yourself? I thought you might have! Introducing the Bestie Bear cut and sew fat quarter now available at Spoonflower!
So go, run! Get your little bears and sew them up and show me!

I have a nice, easy DIY for you all today. I made some scrubs and bath teas for my sister-in-law this past Christmas and was surprised by how easy they actually are! I'd been thinking about making up some of my own combinations and came up with this today. The combination of the pepper and lime is fresh, light and just a tiny bit spicy. I like it with olive oil (we use a really fruity one) but if don't care for the smell or feel you could use sweet almond oil or something else. Basically, can adjust any amounts from the recipe to your liking, which is a great thing about making scrubs!

1/2 c fine sea salt

1 tsp coursely ground black pepper

zest from 1/2 lime

1/2 tsp granulated lemon peel (or zest, if you have it)

olive oil (or your oil of choice)

Combine sea salt, pepper, lime zest and lemon peel in a bowl and mix. Pour into a jar and add some olive oil. Mix and add more olive, if needed.

That's it! Super simple and you probably have most of this stuff in your house already!

Generally when I'm working I need to have some music on. If I don't I get pretty easily distracted. If I'm just doing some internet stuff I'll listen to whatever, maybe look up some new bands. But when I'm working it's usually easier for me to listen to something that I know really well. It helps me focus because I'm paying less attention to what it sounds like or the lyrics. (which I'm probably singing wrong, anyway!) I've never been much of an instrumental person until recently. It's been really working for me when I want to get focused.

Here are a few jams that have been getting me through some work lately:
My good friend Morgan, from Fo' Reals Mom told me about a project that she was invited to do this year called Counting By 12s. Everyone picks 12 goals and does them once a month for the whole year. Meaning by the end of 2013 I will have completed 144 different and many new experiences! The timing of Morgan telling me about this project honestly could not have been any better. This is the first year that I had started a list of goals for myself so yeah, perfect!

1. Go to One New Place - We've been living back on the east coast for well over a year now and I feel like there's no reason for us/me to be going to the same places that we always went to five years ago. We live in a great area that has so much to offer so it's time to start really exploring it.

2. Make One Thing I Could Have Bought For My Home - This is a challenge that I've been wanting to give myself for a while. Right now I'm thinking things like pillowcases, potholders, finishing that bath mat that I started months ago....But I'm hoping maybe this could evolve to some bigger, more challenging projects.

3. Have A Nice Dinner at the Table - My husband and I probably eat 99% of our meals either on the couch ,while watching something on Netflix, or at our respective desks. We have a dining table, we have things to set a nice table and we know how to cook! I'd love to have at least one nice meal a month where I get creative with the table settings and the food.

4. Do Something For the Growth of S. Jane Craft - Making decisions that relate to S. Jane are always tough for me. I'm going to do one thing a month to help promote or grow S. Jane Craft.

5. Make a Recipe That Scares or Challenges Me - I generally shy away from any project that I feel like I might even slightly mess up. Especially when it comes to food. I know how to cook lots of tasty things but (I think) they are all easy. The first thing that comes to mind here is bread. I mean, who wants to put in the effort and then have crappy bread?! Not me, BUT I'M GOING TO. Also this novel of a cake recipe.

6. Create Tutorials/Recipes/Printables for the Blog - I have a lot of ideas all the time. My life is pretty much making things, at work and at home. I want to also teach you how to make some things and share what I've learned!

7. Have Friends and Family Over - I'm sad that this even has to be on here because I actually really love having people over. I love spending a few hours or a whole day/evening chatting and snacking with friends and family. I need this more in my life!

8. Play A Game I'd Probably Never Play- I really, really love video games. I actively seek out new games a lot but I pretty much always stick to the same genres.

9. Give Gifts - I genuinely love giving gifts - and I don't mean like big, expensive, flashy, presents - more like "I saw this and thought of you" kinds of things. Little things that show you've been paying attention. I feel great giving things like that and I'm sure the person receiving will too.

10. Watch/Read/Play/Listen to Something Adam (my husband) Has Asked Me To - Now, this isn't to say that I don't already do this, or that we have nothing in common. Adam often tells me about some funny video he watched or documentary, a song that he's really into, etc. A lot of the time whatever he's talking about ends with "you should really watch/listen to/play it". And almost always I forget, or, brush it off. He is, of course very excited about this part of the list.

11. Do Something I Always Say I'm Going To - Finish that afghan, move the bed, fix up that super cute end table, get drinks with so-and-so. Sometimes I'm a lot of talk!

12. Wear Something Outside My Comfort Zone - I have so many cute things that I almost never wear because, like a lot of ladies, I'm worried how someone else might think it looks on me. It's so silly! So let's do this, bright colored lipstick and other things!

I added a new, super cute, item to my shop today! Pincushions! Right now the only one listed is this gold one below. I was taking pictures of a few other colors when Adam called and told me that I had to come outside because it's almost 60! Or, as he put it on the phone: "you could get and ICED drink!"
Did you all have a good holiday season? I sure hope so. It feels like it all flew by in such a flurry of family and food. We spent Christmas Eve with Adam's family at his parent's house and we welcomed our new little nephew, Apollo. He was so tiny and beautiful and I can't wait to see all the ways he'll have changed the next time we see him.

We did secret Santa for all the adults in Adam's family. I got his sister and made her a little "spa kit" of sorts. I made her two scrubs and a bath tea, crocheted her a few facecloths and a basket, which ended up not being heavy enough to hold the jars (duh!), but I just gave it to her alongside the other stuff.

Oh! And I was finally able to give her the baby blanket that I made for Apollo, since I wasn't able to make it the baby shower.

We spent Christmas day at my mom's and had lots of tasty snacks and listened to metal and soul music. It was really great and relaxing. I made my mom a table runner of sorts. I just realized that I didn't take a picture of it all stitched together, but here is one of it all laid out before I started:

I'll just have to make sure that I get a picture of it on her table sometime.

And well, just like that it's a new year. Crazy how time flies, isn't it? I'm very excited to see what this year will bring. I have a good feeling about it.
